A Photographic Reminiscence
A SPIRAL BOUND CASE STUDY
Author Vernon C. Gray has collected a lifetime of travel images, and along with tales of his worldwide adventures, he wanted a vehicle to pass them along to friends and family. As he had had a great experience with Foster Design on his previous book, The Maritime History of the Vernon H. Brown Family, he asked us to step in once again to produce his pictorial volume on a much smaller scale. Not wanting to go the route of large quantity, wide distribution output, we opted to produce his book in an 8.5” x 11” format with 3/4” black coil binding. The front and back covers were printed on heavier weight stock for added protection. Highly calendered interior pages allow the color images to retain their original vibrance while the larger page size provides flexibility in layout design. The coil binding has an added benefit in that it allows the book to lie completely flat for ease of viewing the content.
We created a two-page spread illustrating the author’s journey beginning in New York, traveling through central Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, the Pacific islands, and ending in Tahiti and Bora Bora. Each square on the map corresponds to the pertinent chapters.
Often a more cost-efficient solution to short-run printing projects, coil binding provides a good option without having to sacrifice an engaging layout—a good format for projects such as personal family histories or commemorative yearbooks.
